Q: Are foundations required? What kind of foundation should I build for my shed?

A: Yes, all Suncast® sheds require a sturdy, level foundation.  The foundation must be constructed of either a wood frame or concrete slab, according to the specifications provided in your assembly manual. Both options are a great choice, and we leave it up to our customers to choose which one of these foundations works best for them. While there any many foundation choices out there, these two options provide the best stability and longevity for your shed.

Q: Does Suncast make an anchoring kit or a foundation kit?

A: No, Suncast storage sheds are used worldwide and it would be impossible for us to provide a foundation kit that meets all local ordinances and geographical requirements all over the world! To get you off on the right foot, we provide general foundation instructions on two options (concrete or wood platform).  If you have further questions on particular foundation specifications we suggest you reference your local ordinance codes and/or reach out to your local home improvement store for further assistance.

Q: I want to make sure my shed is extra secure, can extra anchors be used when I am anchoring my shed floor to the foundation?

A: Yes, extra anchors may be used.  For all anchor applications, please take care to not over-torque when anchoring the shed to the foundation as this may damage the floor.

Q: Do I need to follow the dimensions of the foundation?  Is it okay if my foundation is bigger or smaller than the actual shed?

A: The foundation dimensions provided in your assembly manual offer the greatest support and stability for your particular product.  As this is the case, we do not recommend altering the dimensions, as this may negatively impact the support a foundation should provide. However, it is acceptable to extend onto the sides of the foundation as long as the shed rests on the specified foundation dimensions (as provided in your assembly manual).

Q: I am planning on building a wood foundation.  What size lumber is needed to build the wood frame as specified in they assembly manual? Will using a smaller size effect the stability of my foundation?

A: In order to maintain warranty coverage, all Suncast storage sheds must be assembled on a foundation as outlined in the assembly manual.  We provide specifics for 2 options: either a 4" concrete slab or a wood frame foundation. We do not suggest or recommend material substitutions as this will effect the stability and support of the product.  For a wood frame foundation, the size of the board dictates the load capacity, and should be built to the specifications provided in your assembly manual using 2"x6" lumber.

Q: How many footers (pier blocks) do I need for my wood foundation? What should the spacing be?

A: Unfortunately, this is not a one-size fits all solution. The number of footers (or pier blocks) used for a wood frame foundation will depend on your geographical location as the type of soil in your area and weather conditions will effect this decision. We suggest contacting your local home improvement center for recommendations that will suit your area and/or your particular needs.

Q: What is a vapor barrier? Why do I need it for my foundation? 

A: Vapor Barriers are typically thick plastic materials that are installed across the soil to prevent ground moisture from accumulating and creating excessive condensation. A vapor barrier is suggested for concrete foundations as it helps reduce excessive condensation accumulating on the shed. To ensure you select the proper vapor barrier we suggest you reference local ordinance codes and/or reach out to your local home improvement store for further assistance.

Q: Are pavers an acceptable foundation? Why or Why not? 

A: No. Concrete/brick pavers, and gravel foundations are not recommended as they do not provide a stable foundation.  Overtime, these foundations will shift (as the stones/pavers move independently of each other).  These options also do not provide the flat level surface that your unit requires.

Q: Can I build my shed on a deck instead of building a wood foundation?

A:  No, a deck is not built to the same specifications as the options provided in the assembly manual of your shed, and may not offer the same support as the wood frame specifications (in the assembly manual) provide.
